Escola Básica Integrada de Ribeira Grande is the main primary school of Ribeira Grande, a town located on the north coast of the island of São Miguel in the Azores archipelago. Despite being a city, Ribeira Grande has only about 30 thousand inhabitants spread over 14 parishes. Our school has 5 different buildings serving a total of about 2000 students, giving them the main skills of primary education.
Students' social-economical background is very low, as they derive from poor families whose occupation is mainly the primary sector: agriculture and fisheries. As a result, children lack motivation and interest in school. As we are located in an ultra-peripheral region of Europe, all students and staff would benefit from establishing a relationship where they can communicate and work on joint projects with other pupils and teachers from different European countries. That would result both in motivating, inspiring and promoting communication skills using the English language. For that reason, it is our desire to include students in our mobilities (including at least one with special needs), in order to make this a project that involves all students and make them feel part of a wide team of European learners.
The main building of our school has recently moved to new facilities, with brand new equipment and educational devices. This offers better conditions of safety and a better learning environment. The classrooms offer hi-tech equipment, like computers overhead projectors and interactive whiteboards. To take the most of the new ICT equipment, our priorities are that our staff  can update on new pedagogical approaches, as well as learn new teaching methodologies, improve skills on the usage of ICT and share new ways to motivate and engage students in the learning process.
